The AIP Foundation Launches a French PGCE

The Academy for Innovation in Pedagogy (AIP) Foundation is proud to announce the launch of a new Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) programme for French-speaking teachers, developed in collaboration with the University of Sunderland and the Institut International de Lancy (IIL).

This innovative programme has been developed to extend opportunities for trainee teachers and ensure parity between English and French speaking teachers in the bilingual school community. It will begin in March 2026. The AIP Foundation has already been offering the English version of the PGCE since March 2025.

Francisco Benavente, Director of the AIP Foundation, said: “This new French-delivered programme fully addresses the growing need for teacher training within our international, often bilingual, schools. We are delighted by the University of Sunderland’s responsiveness in adapting the PGCE to the French-speaking context, and we are pleased to support the new generation of teachers throughout their entire professional journey.”

The official launch of this programme was marked by a visit from representatives of the University of Sunderland to Geneva on October 1, 2025, to finalise the partnership with the AIP Foundation and IIL.

This visit also coincided with the official inauguration of IIL’s new B25 building. This state-of-the-art learning center, equipped with multimedia classrooms, digital spaces, and well-being areas, has been made available by IIL as part of its partnership with the AIP Foundation and provides an ideal learning environment for PGCE students.

Dr Ben Middleton, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Education, Society and Creative Industries at the University of Sunderland, said: “This programme represents a significant step in our international teacher education partnership. By creating a French-medium PGCE, we are ensuring that aspiring teachers can access Sunderland’s high-quality teacher training while developing their practice within IIL’s outstanding bilingual setting.”

This international partnership between the AIP Foundation, the University of Sunderland, and IIL marks a major advancement in bilingual teacher training, offering innovative opportunities tailored to the demands of today’s international schools.

The AIP Foundation was established at the end of 2024. Can you explain its mission and objectives?

The creation of the AIP Foundation marks a major step forward in the field of education and training in Switzerland. Through its various training programmes, the AIP Foundation places innovation and pedagogical excellence at the service of those shaping the education of tomorrow. It offers initial teacher training, including PGCE and IQTS with PGCE programmes, tailored support for schools, and adult education courses. To support, train, and inspire — that is the mission of the AIP Foundation.

What sets the AIP Foundation apart from other teacher and adult training organisations?

The AIP Foundation relies on the expertise of renowned partners and offers personalised support. Our trainers are highly qualified and have many years of experience in their respective fields. We also provide a modern learning environment and high-quality facilities within the Institut International de Lancy, ensuring that learners have access to the best possible resources to thrive during their training.

The Institut International de Lancy is indeed a key partner of the Foundation. How does this collaboration enhance your training offer?

The AIP Foundation draws on the 120 years of experience of this Geneva-based institution to deliver high-level training and support. Founded in 1903, the Institut International de Lancy (IIL) is a bilingual international school renowned for its academic excellence and innovative educational approach. A pioneer in the integration of digital technologies in education, IIL has several years of experience in remote teaching and in training and supporting schools.

You offer programmes such as the PGCE and IQTS with PGCE in partnership with the University of Sunderland. Why this choice, and what impact does the partnership have?

A pioneer in international initial teacher training, the University of Sunderland has been educating teachers for over 100 years. The PGCE and IQTS with PGCE programmes offered by the University of Sunderland help develop teaching knowledge and provide a deep understanding of educational theory and practice. These programmes combine practical experience, theory, and research, and equip participants with the skills needed to contribute meaningfully to the education of future generations. The partnership with the Institut International de Lancy enhances these two programmes, ensuring top-quality training that leads to internationally recognized teaching qualifications.

You also support schools with specific programmes. What are the most common needs of schools today?

Today’s schools face a wide range of challenges and needs. We support institutions in various areas, such as implementing the KiVa anti-bullying programme or creating a STEAM lab. We also offer targeted training on artificial intelligence, risk management in schools, and the use of digital tools. Our support is tailored to each school’s specific needs, helping them manage change effectively. We adapt to each individual situation.

Do you also offer adult education courses?

Since December 2024, the AIP Foundation has been offering adult education courses, including certified language training. In our ongoing commitment to lifelong learning and in response to real market needs, the Foundation will soon offer other targeted courses, such as public speaking and business English.
