PGCE with iQTS

The PGCE iQTS at University of Sunderland is a course that leads to Qualified Teacher Status. This is recognised as an international gold standard for teaching and learning across the world. It is a 36-week full-time course, completed in one academic year.

The PGCE iQTS course is split into two semesters and has four core modules. There are two practice teaching modules of 120 days in international schools in Switzerland and two Masters Degree modules, which include research methods.

Primary (5-11 years)

Module 1 Emerging Professional Practice in International Primary Education

30 crédits

This is a first internship taking place at Institut International de Lancy or another international school in Switzerland. This module will give you the opportunity to begin to develop purposeful integration between subject knowledge, pedagogical, and theoretical knowledge content taught in both University sessions and in practical sessions in education settings. Guided by a mentor, you’ll also start to gain an understanding of the role, responsibilities, and requirements of the professional teacher.

Module 2 Professional Practice in International Primary Education

30 crédits

It is the second internship in an international school in Switzerland. Building on the Emerging Professional Practice module, you’ll further develop and consolidate your understanding of the role, responsibilities, and requirements of the professional teacher. Guided by your mentor, you will carry out assessments and build and then give lessons to their class.

Module 3 Professional learning in international primary education

30 crédits

This module will develop your understanding of the content of subject areas taught within the early years foundation stage and the primary curriculum, thanks to the educational content delivered online by the University of Sunderland. You’ll collate a portfolio of evidence to support your development of subject specific knowledge and create an action plan outlining proposed actions to improve this knowledge, as well as reflect on your success. You’ll also identify, refine, and develop your understanding of pedagogical approaches, adaptive teaching, planning, and assessment strategies.

Module 4 Subject Research Study in International Primary Education 

30 crédits

In this module, you’ll continue to explore the content of subject areas taught within the early years foundation stage and the primary national curriculum. You’ll have the opportunity to structure and undertake a piece of independent academic study related to your professional development, based around a resource for use in school, encouraging you to engage in intellectual challenge and dialogue. You’ll develop both general and specific knowledge and skills, tailored to your chosen area of study. You’ll also continue to identify and develop an understanding of pedagogical approaches, adaptive teaching, planning, and assessment strategies.


Secondary (11-16 years)

Module 1 Emerging Professional Practice in International Secondary Education

30 crédits

You’ll also identify, refine, and develop your understanding of pedagogical approaches, adaptive teaching, planning, and assessment strategies.

Module 4 Subject Research Study in International Secondary Education

30 crédits

In this module, you’ll undertake a piece of independent academic study related to your subject specialism and professional development, and engage in intellectual challenge and dialogue. You’ll develop both general and subject specific knowledge and skills to enhance your ability to transfer learning to further study and the workplace.
